Airwaves

Will Someone Call? It's a
regularly heard plea during local non-commercial radio fundraisers, but Will
Someone Call is also the name of a new folk music program airing Monday
mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on WSCW (94.9 FM). The Worcester State College
station has finalized its fall schedule, which features two local music
programs. The Groupie Hour, hosted by station manager Laurie Zylick, can
be heard Mondays at 8 p.m. Awakening Stick will be her in-studio guest
on November 17, Halobox on December 1, and Skingame on December
8. Jon's Local Hour airs Sundays at 7 p.m.
Melissa Cruz hosts a spicy potpourri of programs, including the Latino
Show Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m., the Frank
Sinatra Hour Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. (the voice of the decade is
also paid tribute during WCHC's Simply Sinatra, which airs Sundays from
7 to 9 p.m. on 88.1 FM), and Rap, Dance, R and B, and Reggae Fridays
from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Teresa Iaconi wakes up the West Side with a combination
of funk, soul, and alternative selections Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 10
a.m. Pam Aucoin goes Electronic Mondays at 12:30 p.m., Tara Koblara
Eclectic Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m., and Chris Gremier Modern on
Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m.
Ska/punk gets its due during the Jelly "Beahn" Show Wednesdays and
Fridays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., while The Session fills the airwaves
with rap and R&B Wednesdays from 3:30 to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 9 to 11
p.m. Has Millie Vanilli resettled in Worcester? The Rob and Fab Show
airs Tuesdays from 8 to 11 p.m. while the '80s Explosion occurs Sundays
from 5 to 7 p.m.
Even when the station only could be heard on-campus, WSCW had its share of
devoted metal DJs who spent hours preparing their shows in the hopes of
connecting with just one person. Moses' Metal Show airs Mondays at 11:30
a.m. and Tuesdays from 2:30 to 4 p.m., the Trash Zone rips the waves
Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Fridays at 8 a.m., and Mike Soner plays '80s metal
every Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The majority of the station's programming falls in the alternative and
variety
category, which is reflected in their current Top 10. Phish, headed to
the city for three nights at the end of the month, top WSCW's charts with
Slip Stitch and Pass. Conan O' Brien Live,
Snot (who are at the Espresso Bar on November 28), Save Ferris,
and the soundtrack to I Know What You Did Last Summer follow. The
Cure, Verve, Ben Folds Five, Godsmack, and Jane's Addiction fill
out the chart.
Having just taken its signal off-campus last spring, WSCW is still building
its music library. Local bands are encouraged to send their material to the
station at WSCW, 486 Chandler Street, Worcester 01602. WSCW broadcasts Mondays
through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The station is off the air during school vacations and state holidays.
THE BROWN BAG concert series returns to Mechanics Hall next Wednesday (November
19) with a performance by Carol O'Shaughnessy. The noontime show will be
broadcast live on WICN (90.5 FM). The "first lady of Boston cabaret," who
recently released her debut CD, The Way I See It (Seaside), has been a
longtime Beantown theater mainstay as Reverend Mother in Nunsense and
has performed a series of one-woman shows, including The Music of Judy
Garland and Love Songs from Hell.
Upcoming weeks feature classical pianist Eugene Lumelsky (November
26),
the Silver Leaf Gospel Singers (December 3), and the United States
Air Force Band of Liberty (December 17).
