While summer tends to leave the city's streets (and clubs) deserted, the Dave and Dave Show continues to attempt to pump life into the Worm every Thursday from 9:30 to 11 p.m. on WCUW (91.3 FM). On July 17, they're scheduled to speak with former Bad Brains bassist Daryl Jenifer about his new band, Stealth (see "On the Rocks"), and Middle East regulars Canine, who've been getting good press in the Boston area. They're slated to play live in the studio to promote their July 26 show at Sir Morgan's Cove.

Another Boston-area act, Purrr, played live at 'CUW last month. "They have a heavy, big guitar sound, like 7 Year Bitch," says co-host Dave Goldberg. "They had huge amps and a full drum kit and just wailed. The only technical snafu was the lack of vocal monitors, but they knew the songs well enough to pull it off." Worcester groups continue dropping in, including members of N.E. Hostility. "They remind us [Goldberg and co-host Dave Lyon] a lot of Korn. We all did our Jonathan Davis imitation when we interviewed them. N.E. Hostility, the East Coast Psychos, and Chillum have been really good to us. Sir Morgan's newsletter, Captain's Corner, gave us a good mention. We've got a nice communication going with them."

Anticipating their return to the area,0 the Daves have been playing the Bush Tetras' Beauty Lies (Tim/Kerr Records). "They're more competent [than they were back in their first life]. The other stuff [early material from the early '80s] had too many distractions. This stays in the boundaries more. Nona Hendryx produced it, and there's a big influence."

The heavens have released a memorable two-CD collection, Sun Ra's The Singles (Evidence Music). "They [Arkestra] would put them out every year in amounts of no more than 500 or 1000. The '50s stuff is doo-wop street-corner stuff, but it's still Sun Ra. Then there's their blues-jazz period. By the end, they're doing rocket ships, and they're off in space."

Goldberg continues to explore the ever-expanding world of techno. Boston's Veronica Black Morpheus Nipple's 45 (Pussy Kitty) "is a little into the electronica with a New Yorkish street sound" while Albuquerque, New Mexico's Decomposed Skunk Bud Productions has provided him with the Death-Grind-Core-Elektro-Cyber-Industro Comp 1.1 metal-meets-techno in an industrial wasteland cassette and Diverje's metal-esque Electrodiums.

DAVE AND DAVE aren't the only media mavericks on the dance floor. Static Fusion, aired over WCCA-TV 13, Greater Media Cable's local-access channel, recently visited the newly reopened Space on Harding Street for a night of industrial-techno sounds. This month's programs feature performances by Undo, Volknine, and Veronica Black Morpheus Nipple. Static Fusion now airs Mondays at 6 p.m. and Thursdays at 10:30 p.m.

THE JOYCE DiCAMILLO TRIO open the 1997 Summer Brown Bag Noontime Concert Series next Wednesday (July 17) at Mechanics Hall. As always, the free concerts will be simulcast over WICN (90.5 FM). Regulars on the Manhattan jazz circuit, the trio released their second CD, Freelancin' (Seaside), last October.

The rest of the Brown Bag schedule features organist Timothy Smith and violinist Matthew Barrie (July 23), classical pianist (and WICN's classical music director) Catherine Fuller (July 30), soprano Maria Ferrante and pianist Malcolm Halliday (August 6), the Sol y Canto Duo (August 13), and the Tuxedo Classic Jazz Band (August 20).

THE JAZZY SONIC EXPLORERS are paired with local funksters Borderland on the July 14 Sunday Night Concert Series, which airs at midnight on WCUW.
